Reconstruction of the M3 Metro Line, Budapest

About the building

The M3 metro line (north-south metro line) is the longest line of the Budapest metro network with a traffic length of 16.4 km, which runs between Kőbánya-Kispest and Újpest-központ, and has 20 stations. The construction of the M3 metro line began in 1970, and the line has been operating in its current form since 1990, when the section between Göncz Árpád városközpont (formerly Árpád híd) and Újpest-központ was handed over.

About the project

The reconstruction of the M3 Metro was a very complex project from an acoustic point of view. The middle section consists of the stops from Nyugati pályaudvar to Klinikák. Our main tasks were the acoustic dimensioning of the station halls, noise reduction on the tracks and the electro-acoustic design of the passenger information system. The large, noisy and initially very resonant station areas had to be redesigned in such a way that the information provided by the passenger information system can be clearly understood throughout the station. A particular challenge was the often limited space available and the extreme physical conditions, such as the wind effect caused by the trains and the high pressure washability requirement on the track zone’s acoustic coverings.

We prepared station room acoustic designs and electro-acoustic modelling calculations for the distributed passenger information system for 19 stations along the entire line. In total, more than 2000 loudspeakers were designed. A part of one of the stations’ 3D room acoustic model is shown in the image below.

  • Stations’ room acoustic design
  • Electroacoustic design of the passenger information system
